  1. Capercaillie is a large BIRD of the grouse
  2. type found in coniferous woodland in Europe
  3. and North Asia. At nearly 1m (3ft) long, the
  4. male is the biggest gamebird in Europe, with
  5. a largely black plumage and rounded tail 
  6. which is fanned out in courtship. The female
  7. is speckled brown and about 60cm (2ft) long.
